More creativity needed among leaders

Also via Marci Segal.
I have commented on this before and gave a link to the IBM report but Marci does a great summary for those who don't want to read the whole report.

How companies can promote creativity

Shared by March Segal from Harvard Business School
These days, as global competition intensifies, it's more important than ever that companies figure out how to innovate if they are going to maintain their edge, or maintain their existence at all.

The Elusive Big Idea

Ideas just aren’t what they used to be. Once upon a time, they could ignite fires of debate, stimulate other thoughts, incite revolutions and fundamentally change the ways we look at and think about the world. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/14/opinion/sunday/the-elusive-big-idea.html?_r=4&pagewanted=all

Creativity takes time and work

Malcolm Gladwell reckons it takes 10,000 hours to master, well, anything. And according to US broadcaster Ira Glass, creativity, too, takes time to hone. In this video we are reminded of the importance of perseverance and doing work – lots of it.http://idealog.co.nz/blog/2011/08/creativity-takes-time-and-work-ira-glass?utm_source=IdealogDailyBacon&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=20110817

The environment and creativity

This article takes a look at how to help maximize creative thought by carefully structuring the environment around you. Everything from the design of your office to the specific hours of the day that you choose to work can play a key role in how effective you are when it comes time to actually get things done.

Creative Types are Full of Themselves

Psychologists asked more than 1,300 college students to complete a personality test and various creativity questionnaires. The data they collected was self-reported and measured creative abilities mainly in arts, crafts, drama, and creative writing.
And what did they conclude?

Creative Kids Drum Workshop

As part of the Taranki International Festival of the Arts http://www.taft.co.nz/artsfest/festival-gem.htmlI have been working with kids in Taranaki schools - that's in New Zealand - making drums.

The workshops have three parts:
1. Making the drum
2. Decorating the drum and
3. Playing the drum

The last workshop from which these pictures come feature students from Coastal Taranaki School.

The drums will be part of a parade that will march through the main street of New Plymouth and will feature 1000 lanterns and 100 drums.

Thanks to all the schools who made this happen and especially thanks to the kids for their great work.

IQ tests and creativity

IQ tests have received a very large number of criticisms since their inception. One of the main arguments made against the use of IQ tests is that they don't measure creativity. But is this true? Surely creativity involves thoughtful reasoning, divergent production, pattern detection, learning, and other skills tapped into by IQ tests

Two different histories

I have long been a fan of Robert Fritz www.robertfritz.com and his work on the creative process. This facebook link gives an insight in to his work and uses the example of the very successful Uganda Rural Development and Training programme to demonstrate the importance of focussing on the creative process rather than on a power politics and problem orientation.

Leadership by Design

He didn’t head up an army or corporation, wasn’t elected to any public office, was not the leader of a foundation, and wasn’t wealthy. In fact, he had none of the trappings most people usually associate with leadership – yet Buckminster Fuller’s leadership surely changed the world during the 20th century, and his impact continues into this century as well.

Live below the line - creativity required

For 5 days in August, thousands of people across New Zealand will spend just $2.25 each day on food, and use their daily experiences to bring extreme poverty to the centre of conversation in homes and workplaces.

At the same time, they’ll be fundraising for 5 different organisations that are fighting poverty in a myriad of different ways.
